Yew is unique in that is a softwood with hardwood characteristics. It is flexible and strong and therefore been the wood of choice for archery bows in medieval warfare. Yew trees are capable of living for thousands of years and have much folklore surrounding them, they are often found in Christian churchyards as they are seen as a symbol of eternal life.
